Sales are down at Kalamazoo County's only Krispy Kreme Doughnuts store in Portage, so it will be closing soon. It opened less than 4 years ago, just before Xmas in 2004. A Village Green laundry was razed to make way for the new Krispy Kreme building at 6278 South Westnedge Avenue on the Southland Mall pad. This is surely good news to the owners of Sweetwater's Donut Mill, which has gained some national attention in the years since Krispy Kreme opened. On the day of Krispy Kreme's grand opening, Sweetwater's was across the street at Belle Tire giving away free doughnuts. Belle Tire was itself a new location at the time, built on a site that was a Ponderosa Steakhouse.
Meanwhile, years of seeing Sonic Drive-In Restaurant ads on tv will finally pay off for Kalamazoo County residents. Construction on Michigan's second Sonic will begin this month in Portage on undeveloped land on the south side of Romence Road between D&W Fresh Market and Ritter's Frozen Custard. This Sonic franchise is owned by Saint Joseph based Trigo Hospitality, which also owns all the Pizza Hut and Panera Bread franchises in West Michigan. This Sonic location is scheduled to open by Xmas.
Also opening soon in Portage is Kalamazoo County's second Wings Etc. restaurant. It is scheduled to open late this month at 7337 South Westnedge Avenue. This franchise is owned by Tom Potts of Portage.
Are you sad Krispy Kreme is closing? Are you happy Sonic and Wings Etc. are opening? Please share your feelings and opinions.
