Storm Team 8 Chief Meteorologist Craig James Woods is retiring on Friday, June 27. Craig has probably been on television in West Michigan longer than anyone else. He's been on tv for 40 years, 35 in West Michigan, and has been at Channel 8 since November 1985. His first day on-air was July 4, 1968 at KDKA in Pittsburgh.
Bill Steffen will become the new Chief Meteorologist. He will not shave off the moustache he has had since he was 19 years old. The other remaining on-air members of Storm Team 8 are Terri DeBoer, Matt Kirkwood, and recent addition Laura Velasquez. The last weatherperson to leave Channel 8 was Joe Sullivan on Sunday, August 5, 2007. Departures immediately prior to that were Ginger Zee in 2006 and Keith Monahan in 1998.
Craig's retirement was announced on 24 Hour News 8 the evening of Tuesday, May 20, during the last week of sweeps.
Former Channel 3 meteorologist Pete Sack is now at WMAQ in Chicago, the same station as Ginger Zee. I believe Pete Sack worked at WWMT at the same time as reporter Rod Johnson. Also around the same time, anchor/reporter Andrea Morehead was at Channel 8. I believe I saw her earlier this year on NBC's The Chris Matthews Show as a roundtable guest on the topic of the Democratic Party Presidential Primary in Indiana. It's interesting the NBC affiliate in Indianapolis is Channel 13.
Here are the whereabouts of some other former West Michigan meteorologists and weather reporters:
