You make a very good point about taking everything IN CONTEXT, and in this case that context is the time period. To judge a personality of decades ago by standards upheld by today's society is to do severe injustice to that personality.
Moreover, one doesn't have to be a celebrity to have weakness of flesh. EVERYBODY, without exception, is subjected to this weakness. After all, that is human nature. A celebrity simply has more opportunities to "give in." On the other hand, a celebrity also has the misfortune of being more scrutinized by society.
I am one of those, Larry, whose opinion of Jim remains unscathed by revelations in the book.
