Whittemore Criticism
Posted by David Cozy on September 18, 2002, 7:33 pm Jacket copy suggests that articles about his work appeared--many years ago--in venues such as Harper's and The Nation. Also, I learned from a website devoted to Thomas Disch that he reviewed a Whittemore novel for the TLS. I would like to get my hands on as many of these articles as I can. Any help would be appreciated. I may miss messages posted to this board, so please feel free to email me at the address above. Best, David

Re: Whittemore Criticism
Posted by Anne on September 18, 2002, 8:50 pm I searched high and low for articles when I was designing this web site and the only ones I could find were the Jeff VanderMeer piece and the article by Erik Davis for the Village Voice. All those old articles would have been before the computer age, so I imagine that one would have search the archives of the newspapers and magazines who did publish them. After all it's getting on for twenty years since they were written. If I ever do manage to track them down I will let you know. Anne --Previous Message--

Anne, can you do something about that free blackjack software spam? This kind of thing can't be avoided when you devote a site to the author of Jerusalem Poker, I suppose ;-) Best, --Previous Message--

Posted by Anne on May 11, 2005, 9:04 am, in reply to "Re: Whittemore Criticism" I have used my administrative powers and removed the offending spam. Surprisingly this board doesn't get much and I normally delete it immediately it appears. The Disch article is indeed on the articles page.

This man (I thought) is writing this way just to be avant garde-ish, and also possibly because he has nothing to say. He's made a career for himself since, but my opinion remains the same. Bill

Re: Whittemore Criticism
Posted by Bill Healy on June 13, 2005, 11:53 am, in reply to "Re: Whittemore Criticism" But speaking of the Irish (weren't we? I guess this should be a separate thread), I have to say that Whittemore just nails Joe's character exactly where I would like to think my ancestors' descendants should be: between jokes, so to speak. Between the stage Irishman (who only leaves home so he can get drunk and sing about how much he misses it) and the bomb-throwers (who are afflicted with Irish Alzheimer's disease - you forget everything but the grudge). Joe has seen enough to make him give up and join one of the above, but he doesn't. He holds good and evil within himself and sees the possibility of both within others - and lives with it. That's imagination enough for anyone. Irish John Duddy went the distance last night and won. Do you suppose he has a Beare in his family tree? Bill --Previous Message--

Re: Whittemore Criticism
Posted by Anne on June 13, 2005, 12:18 pm, in reply to "Re: Whittemore Criticism" I thought Disch's review pretty silly myself. Perhaps, at the time of writing there was a surfeit of avante guarde writing and it pissed him off. On other news, I have been contacted by Helen Bar Lev, the woman with whom Whittemore lived whilst he was in Jerusalem. We've been having an interesting communication on the type of person he was. She has sent me some poems she wrote about him and will also contribute some sketches and paintings of the man as well. Look to see them soon. The poems provide some insight into Whittemore, the person.

Re: Whittemore Criticism
Posted by Pat MacAodha on June 13, 2005, 4:55 pm, in reply to "Re: Whittemore Criticism" I'm really looking forward to the poems. I remember getting chills when I read the afterword in the Old Earth Books by Judy Karasik because I realized that this was the first time that we have a speaking Whittemore or (to put it another way that won't get me sly looks from Derrida) a Whittemore that speaks outside of his fiction. Another demension of Whittemore. Bill- I think you're absolutely correct about Joe. If I may refer you to a post I made a while back, "Many Thanks" it's called and I think it's in one of the replies, I go in at length why I think Joe is such a fine Irish character. Anne- everything you do for us here is much appreciated and the spam campaign is no exception. Thank you! --Previous Message--

Re: Whittemore Criticism
Posted by Jean-Daniel BREQUE on June 14, 2005, 2:51 am, in reply to "Re: Whittemore Criticism" Anne: Anne, you're whetting our appetite. About the Disch article : By the way, I looked up his review on the site: was the Wildwood edition of Jerusalem Poker really 1408 pages long? Thanks God I only translated the streamlined version. Best,

Re: Whittemore Criticism
Posted by Anne on June 14, 2005, 7:39 pm, in reply to "Re: Whittemore Criticism" The OEB 1st edition actually missed the prologue by mistake. It has since been/or will be reinstated if there has been a second edition. --Previous Message--
