Thank you for taking the time to read my opinion piece, and for taking the time to respond.
By no means do I have any objection to Dale Earnhardt Jr. winning the MPD voting. I thought I made it clear that he’s fortunate to have a legion of committed and passionate fans . . . the kind of fans that remain even when performance isn’t going as well as either they, or him, would like.
My problem is with the methodology of the ballot. Under a single-fan, single-vote method the fact remains that Dale Jr could still win the vote by landslide margins and most likely would win in that fashion. If 1.5 million people cast single, individual ballots, and the Earnhardt total was 200,000 more than the second place driver, whoever that might be, the card-carrying members of “Junior Nation” would have just another piece of bragging rights. And under a single vote system, the bigger the margin of victory, the bigger the bragging rights.
Who is harmed by a published vote tally? If mid-vote tallies were published, driving more participation in the process, I don’t think that would be such a bad thing, either.
One of the beauties of being involved in this sport is the ability to have a viewpoint, express that viewpoint, and realize that there are those who will disagree. You have some valid points in response to my opinion, and I’m glad you took the time to express them.
I hope you have a very happy holiday season. We get to fire ‘em up again at Daytona in just 80 days.
