Since Edward already held titles, Earl of Wessex, Earl of Fofar and Viscount Severn and he still retains them, they are now his subsidiary titles. The Dukedom of Edinburgh was a sole creation for his life.
What about the subsidiary titles? Is Prince Edward also Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich? Or, since it has been recreated as a life title, has the King only conferred him the Dukedom of Edinburgh?
When the Forfar title was given to Edward I felt there was more to it at the time. So I'm now thinking the late Queen and Duke and the then PoW Charles agreed, or Charles made clear, that Edinburgh would be created next for lifetime only. The late Queen then granted Forfar to ensure the Wessex family would always have a title to use in Scotland.
