I fully understand why it was to be given after the title had reverted to the Crown - because in that way - there would only be 1 Dukedom of Edinburgh when a new Dukedom was created for Prince Edward.
But given that Prince Charles would never use the Edinburgh title... would not it have been a sweeter gesture that Queen Elizabeth would have created a Dukedom of Edinburg for her son? knowing that the dukedom created for Prince Philip would "cease to exist"/revert to the Crown within a limited amount of years?
I am sure Prince Edward would rather have been given it by his beloved mother - that from his brother?
The dukedom could not just be dismissed because the holder Charles was not using it.
The late Queen had no power to interfere with that.
The dukedom was active - for Philip then for Charles and not available for a new creation - until it reverted to the crown on Charles' accession after the death of the Queen.
