What I find strange is the deffered resignation. I mean, British PM’s first resign before the press (announcing it in a public statement) and then, days or weeks later, before the monarch, only when it is clear who the next PM will be.
The could tender their resignation before the monarch, who would accept it and ask him/her to act as PM until a new PM is appointed.
The monarch is informed of the prime minister's intention to resign before it is announced publicly. They stay in office either at their own suggestion with the monarch's consent or at the monarch's invitation, (not sure which applied in the most recent cases) until their party has elected or appointed a successor whom the monarch will then invite to form a new government.
