I don't agree. I quote from a parliamentary website. (I also don't agree that UK was without a Prime Minister or a government for six weeks.)

A prime minister stays in office until he or she tenders their resignation to the monarch. Their resignations are usually caused by losing their parliamentary majority in a General Election or by losing the confidence of their party (eg. Johnson and Truss) or through personal circumstances eg. sickness (Macmillan). But until they resign, they stay in office.
