Re: 30 Years Ago: Jerry Lawler Wins AWA World Title

I always felt Lawler was at his best when chasing the world champ whomever it was. He always seemed to step up his technical work against the best. I saw a match in '85 at the Municipal Auditorium against a subtle heel Rick Martel for the AWA title that Lawler hung with Martel hold for hold. I had never seen Lawler look so good as most of the time time Lawler was just average technically. Not saying he wasn't a great psychologist, mind and promo because he certainly was & could work both heel & babyface. He was a little undersized as well compared to the top guys of the era but I don't think that hindered him much if any. He also had a lot of magic in the Mid-South Coliseum that didn't carry over everywhere he went.
