It's interesting, in the early 80's, I think '83, I saw Lawler live in Green Bay against John Tolos, and it was something of a dud. I was real excited to see him too, and then it was just totally flat. He might have worked as a heel in the AWA when it was still going strong, and maybe would have gotten over as a face in time, and my opinion is clouded from what I saw live, but he seemed a bit of an ill fit in the AWA to me. It's weird too cause he and Bockwinkel were so incredibly magical in the ring together, and it seems a natural that could have carried over to the upper Midwest and western USA,but I'm not so sure it would have. I do think Lawler could have worked as NWA champion had he bulked up some.
