Solo diving is a personal chioce. Frankly, I don't need you or anyone else telling me what risk I can or can't introduce into my life provided my choice does not put others at risk. As divers, we enjoy one of the last bastions of unregulated freedom of which I am aware. Any more of this unsupported finger pointing and you can bet we'll wind up with state and federal regulation that will ruin one of the most beautiful aspects of our sport. I don't know the skill level of Mr. Fabiano but I do know that now is not the time to be commenting on it. Additionally, boat captains are not mind readers. Divers need to understand that all have limitations and that there are some dives that are beyond our ability. When such a dive comes our way, step back and enjoy the sunshine on the deck. Ultimately, we are all responsible for our own actions. No one understands our capabilities on any given day better than ourselves. A wallet full of c-cards means nothing. If you've seen many divers you know that certifications are of little use in evaluating a diver's skills. I know too many card collectors that aren't worth much in the water. Your acusations are, to be polite, irresponsible. Please do not confuse a boat captain with a baby sitter. You place on them the burden of seeing through meaningless certifications, equally meaningless dive logs, and divers that exaggerate their abilities. Moreover, there are divers who genuinely believe they are capable of dives that are, in actuality, beyond their ability. Nonetheless, they, in good faith, tell the captain they are able. There is a difference between a captain that knowingly allows a diver to make a dive beyond his ability and one that has no way knowing the extent of the diver's skills. Confusing the two results in serious and hurtful accusations against good men and women. Sometimes, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Sometimes, it's just a plain and simple accident. Perhaps it's best to just sit tight and let all the facts come in.
