That is a false comparison because the times have changed. Back in the 1970's, society was overall more docile towards people in power in general and the royal family in particular.
Had Prince Bernhard, or any Dutch royal, been found with his hand in the cookie-jar in this day and age, no amount of constitutional threats (or blackmail) from Queen Juliana or Princess Beatrix, could have helped him. He would have stood trial and, if found guilty, done time. And after that, he probably would have left the country for Italy (Porto Ercole) or some other location. But he would not have been allowed to stay in the country, not if the Queen (either Juliana or Beatrix) had wanted to hold on to her throne.
