The most shocking case was Carlos II of Spain, son of an uncle/niece couple and descendant of several other u/n couples.
Several cases in Spain : Infante Antonio of Spain married his niece Maria Amalia
Fernando VII married two nieces Maria Isabel de Bragança and Maria Cristina of Naples
Infante Carlos Maria Isidro married two nieces too : Infantas Maria Francisca and Maria Teresa of Bragança
Infante Francisco de Assis married his niece Luisa Carlota of Naples
Pr. Maximilian of Saxony married 1st Carolina of Parma and 2nd his niece Maria Luisa of Parma
D.Afonso V of Portugal married his niece Juana to support her claim to the throne.
D.Manuel I married 3rd his niece Infanta Leonor
In other cases, in countries abiding for Salic or semi-Salic law, when the ruler only had daughters, it was common for her to marry her uncle (or 1st cousin) and keep it in the family.
The Braganzas did have a habit of marrying in the family and not just first cousins.
Maria I married her father's younger brother and their oldest son married her youngest sister who was his maternal aunt and his paternal first cousin.
The marriage remained childless and he died young otherwise the line would have been even trickier.
Of course I don't mind.
Glad you appreciated it.
I missed one important marriage:
D.Pedro --- D.Maria II---
................................ -
D.Miguel------------------
In 1826, when she was 7, D.Maria married by proxy her uncle D.Miguel.
The marriage was dissolved and declared null in 1834, and, naturally, it was never consumated, neither the bride and groom ever saw each other in that capacity, but, nevertheless, it took place.
D.Miguel returned with his parents from Brazil in 1821, when D.Maria was only 2 years old.
Never read anything about the relation (if any) he had with his niece while both stayed in Brazil.
There might have been another uncle/niece marriage as one of D.Miguel possible brides was D.Ana Carlota de Moura Barreto, a daughter of his youngest sister Infanta D.Ana de Jesus Maria, duchess of Loulé.
The fact that the duke of Loulé was a constitutionalist and supported his niece D.Maria II frustrated the plan.
This is awesome. I hope you don't mind, but I saved it in a Word document.
