Perhaps His Eminence the Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid could explain to His Excellency the Duke of Alba that a Catholic marriage IS a public event. That is why Canon 1118 of the Code of Canon Law reads, "A marriage between Catholics or between a Catholic party and a non-Catholic baptized party is to be celebrated in a parish church."
Does that mean the marriage is not canonically valid?
There is no question that the marriage is canonically valid. There is every reason to think that the Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid gave a dispensation for the marriage to occur in the Liria Palace garden. Even if he did not grant a dispensation, this would merely mean that the place of the marriage was illicit - but that would in no way affect the validity of the marriage.
