The question of which branch is senior will probably never be resolved. As with most dynasties, the early Hohenzollern genealogy is poorly documented. Different sources present the earliest generations differently. As Prussia emerged as a European power and symbol of Hohenzollern greatness, it was also desirable for the Prussians to be viewed as the family's senior line.
