Donar Bloodaxe: I misread it. I thought you posted "light gallery". LOL
Sounds like a southman's version of a Drakkar Dragonship. How about 60 feet long, 8 feet wide, 30 oars with a cargo capacity of 3 ton?
kimbapanther: Thanks. Two men to an oar?
Donar Bloodaxe: Usually. So a crew of about 70 total.
kimbapanther: And your serpants would be faster because of more oars, on a smooth sea or a light wind, but with wind and chop, I'd probably be faster?
Donar Bloodaxe: Just the opposite. The galley would draft deeper than the dragon with equal loading.
The dragon would therefore handle rough seas more easily due its flex. In smooth seas the clinker construction (overlapping strakes) works against the dragon. The galley's strakes are butted up against each other tongue-in-groove, giving it a sleeker draft thru calm seas.
kimbapanther: Thanks alot. We'll incorporate that into the roleplay when we go after the spices. So we could realistically catch a larger ship on calm seas, and we wouldn't be able to take all of their cargo, how many barrells do you think we could get on our ship?
Donar Bloodaxe: The weight wouldn't be a problem. With something light (low density) its the volume that becomes the problem.
Just as a guess.... maybe a dozen 55 gallon barrels set upright in the aisle between the two rows of oar benches.
