I carefully squirted a little acetone/ATF mix into the filler cap tube from inside the fount, and let it sit upside down for a day. This wasn't easy as the tube protrudes into the fount, and this is a little lantern without much in the way of clearances.
I also put a little of the mix at the top, hoping to penetrate the threads from both directions.
Then I put this on the filler cap to let me get more torque:
I've twisted on it this morning, and again just now, applying firm but not stupid torque and keeping tension on for as long as I could hold it. It finally broke loose. As you can see, the acetone/ATF completely penetrated the filler cap threads. The entire base of the cap is damp with oil, though it doesn't look that way, so I guess it did come from the bottom as well.
Thanks everyone!
