"Rust remover" gel in WalMart Auto section. Lowes has it to. Works for me. brush it on, Once rust is gone, wash, dry, polish with fine steel wool and paint. Works for me; others will undoubtably differ as usual. I don't do it all that often. In fact I got all the lanterns I want and probably won't be buying anymore.
