Sorry Sue, but your story is a fantasy with no substantiating data. Most of the earlier tubular lanterns are weak at the tube-to-fount juncture, so accidental bending like this is fairly common. The later designs, after 1935, and including the Air Pilot lanterns, have added support struts to prevent this bending. Please excuse our jocularity, but our ridicule is about the many lantern myths that appear on ebay, and not about you.
