The black residue forms mostly on Iron like the part in video or cast iron pans. Brillo pad and water removes that. What is on lantern will wash of with a plastic brush and the water hose. I then place in the Molasses for a day and use one Brillo pad to polish. Look at the Before and after pictures in post CITY OF LA Embury 210 Supreme. or S-4-36 Blizzard.
Try it out on and old junker.
