I don't know what they thought they were bidding on but it is part of a darkroom lantern. It is missing the font and burner. A bail was added, a star was punched in the back, a plate (with candle) covers the hole in the bottom where the font should go. Even the flat strap that normally would hook a pin on the font is still on there (folded under the bottom). It would be from around the 1895-1910 time. The seller said mid 1800's. I even sent the seller a message letting them know what it actually was and even included an eBay item number for them to compare it to but apparently they decided not to share that info or correct their description. Of course you can't put all the blame on the seller, after all there were 6 bidders that jumped in on this "ANTIQUE EARLY FOLK ART LANTERN". And the final bid was $294.00.
Sorry, I just needed to vent a little.
