Nonex is a perfect example of how improvements can be invented but don't result in increased profits. Nonex almost put Corning out of business because they worked so well that orders for replacement globes fell sharply. In 1915 Corning decided to remove the lead component of Nonex and make glass for bakeware. The first bakeware they made was pie plates - hence the name Pyrex. Corning was saved by WWI because it gave them the market for scientific glassware that was previously filled by Germany. Eventually pyroceramics were developed for the space program and CorningWare was born.
