It has not been this damp for so long in Massachusetts in a long time, and the humidity and rain really affect things. Another factor is how often you let the wick burn dry, as that makes it char up quite a bit. If I was getting 6 weeks between trimmings I would be happy as could be. At intervals like that there are other issues that will crop up instead. For instance, I am starting to see that round felt wicks deteriorate just sitting in the kerosene to the point where they are to weak for the wick adjuster to bite into them. In that type of lamp I cut wicks in half as a full sized wick will often meet a death well before it is half used up (in a Luck-E-Lite for instance).
As far as store bought bottles, I havn't bought any in a couple of years as it is too expensive for the amount I use. I go through about 2-3 gallons of kerosene a week so I stick with the pump stuff. I had a party tonight in fact, and eaily burned up more than 2 gallons tonight alone - mostly in Toledo torches and truck flares, to confuse the bugs as much as possible. I'm also not sure about red dye's contribution to things but if it does then what you would save over the store bought fancy stuff would still far outweigh increased wick consumption.
