birds ages

we have a cockatiel that we figure is 25...wondering how old is the oldest bird on this board... thanks

I've had Solomon for 31 years. He was well-grown when I got him. He's at least 33 years old, probably older.

MANY years ago, here or on Tiel Talk or both, was someone named Agneta who had a cockatiel named Brunte, and Brunte was 36 years old.

The oldest Cockatiel that's in the Guinnes book of records is Sonny, and he's 33. He was born on January 10, 1993. He's still living!

THey have records of his age. With Solomon, I have no records of his hatching, and he was given to me with a flock of parakeets, having been rejected by a breeder, sold to a different breeder who gave him to me along with the sick parakeets he didn't want.

I don't even have an exact day that happened, just the year. Heck, Solomon could be 40 for all I know. BUt I do know, he's loved, even though his neck is a bit crooked from arthritis, and he can't see any more. He still finds his food, finds comfort in his companion Rainbow, and sings his heart out every night.

My oldest tiel is at least 26-27 years old and is still with me.

You are doing exceptionally well with Solomon! My 26-27 year old tiel Buddy is a normal gray. I wonder if that has anything to do with their longevity. I have always heard the normal gray mutations are the healthiest. Just curious, what is Solomon?

He's a normal grey. I'd heard that as well. Many of the mutations, especially lutino, are very inbred. I'm not sure if that affects their immune systems or longevity or not.

Yes, it's the inbreeding that causes shorter life spans. The normal greys are the original mutation which is why they live so long. The weakest mutation for having health issues are the whitefaced females.
