Babies like mockingbirds, blue jays and cardinals leave the nest before they can fly. They usually make their way to a bush to stay hidden, and wander around for a few days until they can fly. The parents feed and protect them.

I think that happens because as they grow, they outgrow the news, and maybe the odors form the nest attract predators. So, the little things end up on the ground, wandering around, looking for a bush or small tree to climb into!
