When I was about three My grandmother had Richard brought back from France. His coffin was in the dining room and I lived with my grandparents with my mother and my sister. I wasn't allowed in the dining room or the living room but had to stay in my bedroom or in the kitchen or go upstairs to my great aunts'. His picture in his uniform and a plaque were on the wall in the dining room as I was growing up. My sister Bettie has given them a place of honor in her home along with other's rememberances. My Aunt Esther had a music cabinet with magazines of the Stars and stripes of old ration coupons and books on things regarding the war. What was especially impressioning to me was the books showing the suffering in the concentration camps and what our men and boys fought for to free Europe from the Nazi regime.
