We in America have read with deep concern the story printed below that reports the cancellation of a ceremony to
dedicate a plaque and honour Confederate seaman George Horwood who is buried at St James's. We cannot believe that England, one of our country's best friends and allies, would so insult an American sailor; a sailor in the same Confederate Navy as Admiral Raphael Semmes whom your country honored so many years ago. We would remind you that General
George S. Patton, who led the American Third Army allied with England in World War II was the grandson of a Confederate Colonel. Would you similarly show such distain for this man? We in America have honored the graves of Englishman who fought against us in our wars of 1776 and 1812 because they were honorable soldiers. We ask no less of you?
We find this action very insulting and disturbing and are considering action through the United States Embassy and our Department of Veterans Affairs. We ask in the interest of international friendship and just English good manners that this important ceremony be rescheduled at the earliest possible time. Please advise me when that will take place.
Sincerely,
G. Elliott Cummings
