When the childless Frederik VII died in 1863, the first king of the house of Glücksburg came to the throne. But as it happened, he was called Christian, so that Frederik VII was succeeded, quite "predictably", by Christian IX. However, when he was born, as the fourth son of a minor German duke, nobody could have known that he was destined for the Danish throne, and his parents could of course have chosen to give him a completely different name... Well, the number of kings named Frederik has finally caught up to that of kings named Christian. I honestly wondered if and when the day would come ...
How far back does this tradition go? Is it that "every second king is named Frederik" or "every second king is named Christian"? Has there been any Danish king NOT named either? It has been said that Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II was the "King Christian" who reigned between Kings Frederik IX and Frederik X.
I don't think this "every second King" was intended. Christian I was King 1448-81. He was succeeded by Hans 1481-1513. Then we have Christian II 1513-23 followed by Frederik I 1523-33. After that we have Christian - Frederik - Christian...
There has indeed been Kings with other names, e.g. Knud, Erik, Christopher, Gorm, Valdemar, Harald, Olof, Sven...
