I read, in a MAJESTY magazine article, that King Haakon VII and Queen Maud were initially opposed to their son's choice of bride, and that preferred choice was Princess Ingrid of Sweden. However, Olaf had eyes only for Martha.

It wasn't that his parents had anything against her personally: rather, it was that she and he were too closely related. Not only were they first cousins but also, the king and queen were first cousins. Moreover, Martha's parents were first cousins, once removed. As it was, Olaf had to fight long and hard to win them over to his bride.
