Princess Anne would have been the most logical choice as the daughter of a reigning monarch and 2 years younger than him and not too closely related.
Princess Margriet of the Netherlands is born in the same year as Queen Silvia so might have been another option but she married relatively young so was off the market by the time Carl Gustav and his family would have started seriously looking for a spouse.
Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark and her sister-in-law Annemarie of Denmark were other potential options but the last one was very young when she got engaged and was his first cousin.
The discussion in another thread makes we wonder if there's any indication that either the King's grandfather or mother engaged in any efforts to select a royal bride for Carl Gustav when he was crown prince.
