Mildred - the example you provided here would only be comparable if the stranger asked to buy your car along with you and your family IN IT. Greenland is not just an island or a land mass with potential natural resources yet to be explored/exploited - but has autonomous people (about 56,000 of them!) who live there. Their country is not for the highest bidder. They cannot be be bought and sold like a herd of cattle, so as a protectorate of Denmark, their leader - the PM of Denmark - defended them from such an "absurd" notion.
