Re: Princess Dagmar
Thank you yet again for the interesting information. 🙂
If I'm correct, Princess Dagmar was the only one of her siblings that did not marry royalty. When she married Jorgen Castenskiold she married into the Danish Nobility. Was this considered an issue at the time? Did the fact that she did not marry while her father was still alive and after the First World War play any part? I was always under the impression that her mother Queen Louise was rather strict.
Dagmar's brother King Christian X was against the union, but their mother Queen Louise managed at last to convince him that he shouldn't ruin his sister's happiness by withholding his consent to her marriage. She was after all a grown woman at 32. It has been suggested that the British Princess Mary's recent marriage to Viscount Lascelles made it easier for King Christian to accept his sister's betrothal to a mere nobleman. He made a few conditions, though, first and foremost that she renounce her royal title and rank. It has never been confirmed, but another condition seems to have been that Jørgen Castenskiold put himself in possession of a manor so that they had a decent place to live. Castenskiold did not have the means for this, but his grandfather came to his rescue and bought Kongstedlund manor for the young couple.
