: The Instrument of Government Chapter 5 Article
: 2 states (in the official English
: translation): "Only a person who is a
: Swedish citizen and has attained the age of
: eighteen years may serve as Head of
: State..."
:
: Article 4 states: "Should the Royal
: Family become extinct, the Riksdag shall
: appoint a Regent to perform the duties of
: the Head of State until further notice. The
: Riksdag shall at the same time appoint a
: deputy Regent. The same applies if the King
: dies or abdicates and the heir to the throne
: has not yet attained the age of eighteen
: years."
:
: Does this mean that if the monarch dies and
: the heir is a minor, the heir does not
: become monarch until reaching 18, and there
: is therefore an interregnum? Or does the
: heir succeed with a regency until s/he
: reaches 18?
:
: In other words, if the present King had died
: in 1990, would Crown Princess Victoria have
: been proclaimed Queen, albeit with a regent,
: on her father's death? Or would she have
: remained Crown Princess Victoria until her
: 18th birthday?
:
: Thanks for any insights.
:
The minor heir/ess would become King/Queen immediately upon the death of the Monarch and a Riksföreståndare (Regent) would be appointed.
