Assuming that you are scheduled to have implants, after mastectomy the plastic surgeon inserts tissue expanders, temporary "placeholders" if you will. These are gradually filled with saline to stretch your existing skin and muscle to prepare a cavity for the final saline or silicone implant. It is a process that takes time, and if neither of your physicians have spoken to this issue, you need to ask and make sure you know what sort of schedule you will be on. Your PS should also discuss with you what discomfort (if any) to expect thru this process (some ladies handle it better than others, but since you have had rads, there is the possibility of more discomfort at fills and complications).
