While John Wayne had made a dozen or more movies before, Stagecoach was considered his big Breakout movie that made him a star.
1849 Edgar Allan Poe, age 40 – US short story writer and poet
An anonymous "Poe Toaster" left three red roses on Edgar Allan Poe's grave every year on his birthday (January 19th) from approximately the 1930s or 1940s until 2009 as a ritualistic tribute. The mystery man would also leave a bottle of cognac, with the roses believed to represent Poe, his wife Virginia, and his mother-in-law Maria Clemm. The tradition ended after 2009, but a new, different visitor has continued a daytime tradition of leaving roses at the grave since 2016.
