1964 US First Lady, Lady Byrd Johnson, along with Marian Pearson, the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, opened the Roosevelt Campobello International Park on Campobello Island, New Brunswick
She is the reason you see billboards only so tall. They used to be much taller. Here's what I found:
Lady Bird Johnson significantly influenced the promotion of billboard heights through her advocacy for environmental conservation. As First Lady of the United States from 1963 to 1969, she championed the Highway Beautification Act of 1965, which aimed to reduce visual pollution along highways, including excessive billboard advertising.
1975 Viking 1, an unmanned US planetary probe, was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on a mission to Mars.
This is the one my husband worked on, and we were witness to the launch. We lived in Cocoa Beach, FL. He worked on Orbiter. Lander took pictures sent them to Orbiter and Orbiter relayed them back to Earth. Those were exciting times. He worked at JPL in Pasadena, CA. We followed him to Florida just for this exciting launch.
