Instantly that first one reminded me of a book I read way, way long time go called The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein. It's about a colony on the moon that is controlled environmentally, etc. by a computer who named himself Mycroft because he, like Holmes brother was mostly a thinker.
