1779 Francis Scott Key – US attorney and poet who wrote the words to the US national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner

There is a very inspirational video of how he came about writing The Star-Spangled Banner that is being viewed all over You Tube. Especially in other countries. I think this video should be played in schools across our country. I know a lot is probably fictionalized, but the basics are there.

1953 The movie Shane, considered by many critics to be the greatest western movie, was released by Paramount Pictures

My folks took my younger brother and I to see Shane at the local drive-in theatre. All I remember about it was that it was in color and at the end when the little boy was calling out for Shane to not go. Maybe I should watch it again.
