The story is that a stranger came into town after the nuns prayed for someone to build them a staircase. He built the staircase without any means of support and it's still a mystery today. William Peterson played that stranger in the movie Staircase and the nuns never saw him again. I believe they never knew who he was either. The hand railing was put in much later. It's quite a mystery.
