1994 Queen Elizabeth and French President François Mitterrand attended ceremonies in Calais, France, officially opening a rail tunnel connecting Britain and the European mainland for the first time since the Ice Age. The channel tunnel, or "Chunnel," connects Folkestone, England, with Sangatte, France, 31 miles away. You couldn't get me in that thing for love or money. I'm pretty sure Connie and Mary went through that when they went to England together.
