1940 Hattie McDaniel became the first African American ever to be honoured with an Oscar. She won for her portrayal of Mammy, a housemaid and former slave in the movie Gone With The Wind
I finally finished GWTW about 3 weeks ago. Whew! Mammy had more of a part in the movie than she did in the book as far as I could tell. I'm glad they made the part bigger, and that Hattie McDaniel was able to win.
