Even though it seems as if everybody else has somehow gotten old (and we haven’t!), we nonetheless enjoyed seeing many of our classmates and friends at the Fabulous 60s school reunion held in Kerrville on October 26 and 27. Many thanks to those who undertook the role of event organizers, Carolynd Nobles Winfield, Sue Turpin Bilbrey, Mike Coffee and Mary Moody Gunnells. More than 70 people were in attendance from classes that graduated between 1960 and 1969. Spouses and even children (who were grownups themselves) gathered under the Pavilion in Louise Hays Park to celebrate youth, long-lost loves and frankly, the ability to survive for 35 or 40 (or so) years past high school. Observing people, trying to figure out “who’s who” was a big part of the fun. Marveling at those who literally haven’t changed (and you know who you are, Biddy!) as well as sharing the latest update on those to whom life has been less kind, kept us busy for several hours. There were lots of hugs, lots of cries of recognition (or in some cases, disbelief…”You’re WHO!?!?) Veterans Michael Holquin and Alberto Gonzales put up a memorial to those who were lost in the service of our country. High school annuals helped as we relived our high school high jinks and laughed over times we spent cruising Main Street, parking at the Million Barrel Tank and dancing at the Youth Center. Even people who had never attended a reunion before showed up! Myra Haren Overall entertained her classmates at a house she rented for the occasion. Lee Jordan took time to drive to the Texas Hill Country to visit with twelve of his classmates and dozens of others. Twoie Darby flew into Kerrville in his Cessna. People who lived in town, including Glenn and Leta Andrews, Janice Crites and her mother, invited everyone to stop by for food and reminiscing. Some came further than others. Deb Darby drove in from Arizona, but loved the 80 MPH stretch of I-10 and enjoyed the ride. One group took a side trip to the wineries around Fredericksburg and had a great time. Mamacita’s Mexican restaurant hosted several groups of revelers and Billie Gene’s Café was the site of a get together for several members of the Classes of 1967 and 1968. Willie Martinez and his lovely wife told us that their son-in-law had designed the building for Billie Gene’s. The next Fabulous 60s reunion will be held in Bastrop, Texas sometime in October of 2008.
