Debrecen couldn’t replicate British skeleton champion Matt Weston’s golden Olympic performance tonight when they lost an eventful battle to ninth placed Ujpest.
The Locos went down to ten men and missed a penalty as their title aspirations suffered a setback at the Szusza Ferenc Stadium.
Ujpest took the lead after 15 minutes through Slovenian striker Aljosa Matko who put the home side two up in the 63rd minute.
Debrecen had squandered a glorious chance to go level after 25 minutes when former PSV Eindhoven man Balazs Dzsudzsak missed a penalty.
Ten minutes into the second half, Debrecen were reduced to ten men when 21 year old Tamas Szucs was dismissed.
Despite being a man down, Debrecen gave themselves a glimpse of an unlikely comeback when Central African Republican central midfielder Amos Youga pulled one back with 23 minutes left.
But that was the end of the scoring and Ujpest ran out 2-1 winners.
Defeat means Debrecen are still third in the Nemzeti Bagnoskag I but their three title rivals all have games still to come this weekend.
Ferencvaros and Gyor are two points above Debrecen and face mid table opposition while fourth placed Paksi can overtake Debrecen with a win over relegation-threatened Diosgyor.
Debrecen's next game is away to the sneeze-inducing Zalaegerszeg on Sunday 22nd February.
