Winnable. Very winnable.
However, we should never forget that Gillingham home cup tie which we lost and put us into administration, and the mother of all downward spirals followed.9B Stockport Edgeley, 9F Heaton Mersey

Wasn't the writing on the wall long before then?
And what was significant about that game?

I said at the time if we had got the Villa money, those in charge would have pissed it up the wall

We drew at Gillingham away in the 2nd round, who were a division below. The draw for the third round round was made and it was Villa at home, which was also selected for ITV coverage. £300k from TV alone. All we had to do was beat lowly Gillingham at home in the replay….. which of course we lost 2-1 after being a goal up.
The extra money could have staved off administration (although it probably just would have deferred it for a bit longer due to the unviable deal the Trust struck with Kennedy). Anyway, the lack of 3rd round money meant the loan creditor David Farms got nervy and wanted to call in their loan. We had a fire sale of players, but all in vain and it put us out of business. The loan and an HMRC debt did us, all of which totalled about half the fee paid for Malik Mothersille.
All from people supposedly ‘in the know’ at the time and might not be 100% reliable.9B Stockport Edgeley, 9F Heaton Mersey

And more recently and at the same stage, there was Aldershot. Although that had less dra.atic consequences! My father was a County fan like my grandfather before :-)
