Simon Wright joins us today, another contributor with an interesting tale to tell. Brought up in Hereford, Simon followed the Bulls as a youngster before moving to the Black Country at the age of 18. His chatty postman Dave was a West Brom fan, as were his neighbours. Simon started attending games at The Hawthorns and ended up having a season ticket for 44 years. West Brom became his first team, Hereford second, and local non-league club Halesowen third, where he’d started watching matches occasionally when the Baggies weren’t playing.
Disillusioned with the modern game in the upper echelons of the football pyramid, Simon gave up his season ticket and started following Hereford on a more regular basis again. However, the distance combined with personal circumstances at home prevented him from heading back to Edgar Street frequently. Simon (who used to edit fanzines for West Brom and Hereford) was then invited to join Halesowen’s media team. “Saves me hundreds of pounds, I still watch decent football, and I can have a beer post-match. A compromise worth doing.” Today, he gives us an insight into his role at The Grove, as well as sharing a footballing memory from yesteryear featuring a former Stockport County fanzine editor!
