I watched it again this afternoon twice. If Charlton were mid table it would be a red. The ref has bottled it and taken refuge in the semantics of how the law is worded.

My father was a County fan like my grandfather before :-)

It wouldn't, because the keeper attempts to play the ball. It would have been a red in years gone by but the rules changes a few years back; the punishment was correct.
