I don't think the players are the ones who deserve the ire though; the clubs and the footballing organisations are the ones agreeing to these additional games and tournaments. A time will probably come where players insert appearance limits into contracts to counter-act the higher and higher demand on them to play so regularly.

The Club World Cup itself is ridiculous in its new format and is simply a FIFA power play aimed at stifling UEFA's presence in football.

Working? For 10 months a year on a decent wage. Playing golf after training. If you're into that kind of stuff. What's you're handicap? Unfortunately I was shit at football. £££ a week plus freebies. An easy life until you might retire at the age of 35. A signing on fee every time you get a transfer. Footballers have it easy nowadays. 30+ years ago former top level players used to get another job once they retired. Occasionally they would come to a lower league club to end their working days. Like the likes of us. It must be dreadful.

I also think it is worth adding that football is - or supposed to be - an entertainment business which should therefore be aiming to please its fans.

I might have missed it but have Chelsea fans really been clamouring to play Esperance Sportive de Tunis?

The clubs who 'qualify' are obliged to take part and can be fined nearly a quarter of a million pounds for refusing to take part.

It is and they take the cash but there has to be a limit. Footie is now marketed world wide. There are many demands of the top
Players and they physically can’t do it. Mentally also too much. Doesn’t matter how much is on offer a heavy price will be paid.

Yet most don't play many more games than league games,due to the fact that in most cup competitions it's mainly 2nd teams as it is mainly is in European games until it's the latter stages.
It would be very interesting to see the stats over a season as to which players have played the most games in all the top 5 divisions in England

Mike Flynn played 66 games for County during the 96/97 season.

Do these guys play an extra 28 games per season, on top of the 38 in the PL??
I'd be surprised if they did........

Julian Alvarez recently played 75 games in a single season in 2023/24 between club and country fixtures.

Apart FROm The fact that the game has moved on a lot since Flynny’s day, the top players play every summer, if not in international tournaments then they have the long distance pre-season tours.

Far more frequent injuries and serious injuries now. Players pushing their bodies to the limit. In the 80s we’d get by with a squad of 12 pros and a couple of amateurs. Can you imagine trying to get through last season like that? We would have been putting half a team out if that.

Granted, the bigger teams in the Europa or Conference Leagues are, but I'm not sure many if any of the teams in the Champions League are playing second-string teams, particularly with the format change this year where they're playing challenging opposition more regularly in the league stage and also playing an extra two games at that stage too.
