I live on the North side of the Island which is divided. The language is Turkish, I have learned the language which is very difficult, no where near fluent but can get by.

I employ locals and live in the Turkish quarter, I have warmed to the culture. I also have residency and hold a Turkish driving licence. I also volunteer to help a local animal charity.

Fluency is a word I consider, IMVHO, as someone who is a multilingual MFL (Modern Foreign Language Teacher) with nearly 40 years' experience, is often incorrectly assumed to mean perfect.

I make mistakes, even though I have one full BA Hons (German) and three degree level qualifications (French, Spanish and Italian). Fluency to me is being able to seamlessly communicate without other than natural hesitation. If yourself and AA can do that, I'd say you're fluent.

PS I'd love to learn Turkish, but concentrating on keeping my 12 languages going.

London- absolutely not ‘taken over by Muslims’, Bradford, was there the week before last, work for a company whose head office is there, obviously a large Muslim population, Leicester, used to visit it regularly, think you’re mistaking Asian for Muslim, high proportion of Hindus I believe, Blackburn, only been twice, both times in and out on County coaches, don’t know the place, Telford, never been, Rotherham, certainly hadn’t been taken over when I worked there, no sign that it had last time I went with County either.
If you don’t need to visit to know what’s going on in these places why does anyone else?

Of our major cities London has a current Muslim population of approximately 14% and other cities are higher - 22% in Birmingham and 25% in Bradford. If people don't think the population and character of our UK cities are changing then they really must be blind or have no knowledge of the past. In my opinion and the opinion of many others these changes are unwelcome and changing our society and national character very much for the worse. My feelings are based not on racism but a genuine concern for what is going on and the deliberate concealment and suppression of facts and opinions by mainstream media outlets.

Not at all; my 4.4% figure was from the 2011 census data; I doubt there's a more reputable source than that, given that the census data for 2021 isn't released yet.

But, having reviewed it again, it's quoted in many places as 4.4% but according to the Office of National Statistics themselves, it was 4.8% in 2011.

Granted that data is old, but the Office of National Statistics released estimate data in 2018 putting the percentage at around 5.1%

Roblee's source isn't an official source of data like mine is, and estimates a 1.2% rise from 2018 to 2021 when there was only a 0.3% rise between 2011 to 2018, so it seems a little inflated to me. Given it's an unofficial source, I'm not sure how much weight can be given to it either.

Funny how you've accepted Roblee's figures as accurate but assumed mine aren't, isn't it?

If you'd done your research, you'd know that these 'Sharia courts' have zero jurisdiction in the UK and any religious judgements or performed ceremonies that are held have no legal status in the UK and any marriages aren't recognised as legal marriages.

If the Muslim population in the UK views Sharia courts as having higher authority and validity than English courts - as many Muslims do, then a parallel legal system is inevitably going to exist. Disputes, divorces, and certain criminal acts will not present to the English judicial system. They will be dealt with and ruled upon by another legal system alien to this country. Maybe it's time you started to explain why you think these things are acceptable and lay out the benefits of mass immigration into Britain. It’s a complicated subject; I’m not sure how far your understanding of ‘illegal migration to this country’ stretches, but not all illegal migration is done so clandestinely. There’s also people who enter the UK legally and remain beyond their permitted stay; there’s failed asylum seekers and there’s people who again are in the UK lawfully but breach the conditions of their stay (for example, work when not permitted to work etc). It’s not as simple as stopping boats crossing the channel to put a stop to illegal migration and it was never as simple as ‘getting Brexit done’ either. The majority of asylum seekers who cross on boats are either granted asylum when they apply for it or successfully appeal refusals, so are genuine refugees.

My personal viewpoint on it varies; do I have sympathy for a Student who overstays their visa? No, not really. Do I have sympathy for those fleeing persecution and claiming asylum? Absolutely. If it makes you sleep better at night knowing the animal whose flesh you consumed was ‘humanely’ slaughtered, then so be it.

There have been plenty of leaked stories showing misconduct at slaughter houses across the UK, with many animals in the videos quite clearly suffering horrific pain before slaughter anyway, so the moral high ground evaporates fairly quickly there.

At the end of the day, that animal is still dead. It was born to be slaughtered for your eating pleasure. To say you’re against ‘animal cruelty’ and then still eat meat that was brutally slaughtered anyway is hypocritical; there’s no other way to describe it.

It isn’t a ‘view’ and the evidence isn’t that they are economic migrants. I provided you a source that quite clearly stated that, based on research from the Refugee Council, most asylum seekers crossing the channel on a boat were genuine refugees on the basis that the UK government granted them refugee status either at the point of application or at a successful appeal.

You deciding they’re economic migrants in the face of that doesn’t exactly disprove the research done.

The report you quote points specifically to the poor collection of relevant data in that regard. You only need to look at the pictures and ethnicity of offenders to appreciate a clear connection.

Again though, you’ve taken evidence from a source and decided you don’t like it and drawn a different conclusion that suits your argument. Whilst the report states that the data is a poor collection of data, it’s more reputable than saying ‘look at the pictures (you know, the ones they've decided to show you); they’re all brown’.

I am a meat eater but I couldnt eat meat if the animal was previously a pet or indeed had suffered unnecessarily during its slaughter, yes some abattoirs are shown up, but are closed down for their practises, it is different.

I’m not vegetarian or vegan, but I am conscious of the implications of eating animals.

It’s silly for people to believe they have a moral high ground because the animal they’re eating has been brutally slaughtered in a ‘humane’ way. The animal is still hung upside down whilst their blood runs out of them into a gutter.

And the truth is nobody truly knows whether that specific animal they’re eating unnecessarily suffered or not. It could well be argued that them being killed at all is them having unnecessarily suffered.

It’s just funny that people’s animal welfare activism (and, in a similar vein, child sexual exploitation activism) starts and ends at the mention of Muslims. Kosher slaughter never gets a mention either, funnily enough.

I appreciate that, but it isn’t as simple as they professing that they’re gay and they’re immediately granted asylum. The government have guidelines and processes in which they assess asylum applicants and consider their claims.

Does that need to change/reformed? Maybe, but given the requirements as they are now, the research shows that the majority area genuine.

What I’m calling out as racist is what Alicante said; it was blatant racial stereotyping that’s not tolerated here (apparently).

You raise an interesting point AA about why Nik is so widely disliked here.
I think a couple of his answers reveal why this is the case.
Firstly he points to the fact that he needs no validation from others and cares little about other people's opinions. These are notably psychopathic personality traits - a lack of concern about others and what they think - combined with narcissistic traits that overestimate one's own intelligence and abilities (grandiosity).
And secondly, his lack of empathy and understanding as to why animals should have a protected right to be killed in a humane fashion rather than a cruel way - and the nonsense he spouts around this - is a real character giveaway.
He has a definite "deportment" problem, in the way he carries himself, that I suspect is not going to change any time soon to improve his standing in the popularity stakes.

I don’t need the validation of other posters, because this board isn’t a popularity contest. If people don’t like what I say on here then that’s unfortunate. I’m confident in my own opinions and don’t need a crowd backing them up to trust them. That was the point I was making; nothing to do with not ‘caring about other people’s opinions’. If people do express opinions then you should certainly expect others to express theirs in response and a lot of people don't seem to like that, as this entire thread has shown.

Nik - I know you say popularity is unimportant to you but with Christmas approaching, I am wondering if there is a chance you might like to become a more pleasant and less disliked person? Maybe you could be more polite, listen to other people more and show them a little more respect and tolerance. Since you're a fan of getting information from YouTube:

Social media (which YouTube effectively is and twitter certainly is) can be a good starting point for getting information but it should never be regarded as the end point. For starters it's worth checking the veracity of any information by looking at the sources supplied, and if no sources are supplied then alarm bells should already be sounding on the validity of any claims. Secondly anything you are exposed to on these platforms is heavily targeted based on algorithms that are shaped by both what you engage with and what you choose to follow. For example: while I had already seen both of the above videos I chose to find them by searching "The Great Replacement" in the search bar and all of the videos I was shown were debunking the theory - I am sure that if you searched for it yourself you would end up with a bunch of videos saying that it's true.

Social media is great, I am practically addicted to several different platforms (including YouTube and twitter), but it is specifically designed to create an echo chamber where being exposed to ideas that challenge your own world view is impossible unless you go looking for it. That goes for people on the left and the right, neither side is immune.
