Should we lower the Pension Age?

Given that we are likely to see a recession the likes of which we have never seen before should the pension age be lowered?

So many jobs are being lost and apparently it is the young that are adversely affected even though our youngsters are far better educated than for example I and my generation are/were.

Boris wants to pump 5Bn into regeneration, perhaps lower the pension age and we oldies can step aside for better educated younger talent, I am ok with stepping aside growing more vegetables with my extra leisure time.

What's the point of increasing the retirement age when the government will spend far more on social welfare and benefits for the millions who are about to lose their jobs?

They raised the Pension age for 1950s born ladies from 60 to 66, literally STEALING £48K from them, my wife included.
I'm, what they call an original Pensioner, on the lower rate, which effectively means, two of us have to live on my Pension of £21 a day.
I have to delve into my meagre savings every day.
There's no way the Government will lower the Pension age, sorry to say for you younger ones on here, you'll probably work until your 70

I would hate to have to stop "work" at any age unless I was forced to due to say physical inability.

Its all due to life expectancy and the need for those working to be able to pay for higher and longer length pension years.

there is never a guarentee though how long you are going to last. my mam reached 100 so they would not have been happy with that.

You’d need to increase the State Pension then
Currently about the worst as a percentage of average wage.

I agree. Think the increase in the pension age, especially for women has been very unfair, and as you say makes little sense now. Their whinging about affordability given the billions they are currently finding doesn't wash now either. There is another factor here in that I was happily retired and living on a couple of pensions, one of which is cash based (defined contribution), from which I've lost close to 20k since the turn of the year. I'm fortunate in that the other pays me a regular amount. However I still have 5 years until I can draw state pension which means I will have to try and make that up in the coming years which may mean me taking a job temporarily from someone younger.

My private pension pot has also taken a bit of beating of late - same as in 2008/9

and I have very little confidence in any government looking after my future but I am not just starting out and it must be a nightmare for young well educated people today to get a job or get on the property ladder

I would sell up and look for somewhere cheaper in France.

My problem is that I’m old and thick with no private pension so that’d be me knackered.
I just hope I snuff it before I retire.
Life wouldn’t be worth living otherwise.

do not say that. i have only state pension but manage ok. lots of things i cannot do what others do on here but it does not bother me. foreign holidays, city breaks, making a weekend of torquay away are not the end of the world if you cannot do em.

In my case, after my rent/bills/food there wouldn’t be anything left for even the simplest of pleasures so I genuinely wouldn’t want to carry on.
Hopefully I’ll kick the bucket before they kick me out of work.

At the minute if you have paid a full stamp you get 175 quid a week, rent and council tax paid as far as I know. Better than nowt, some people don't have that left after rent and council tax. And your match ticket will be cheaper

and don't forget the bus pass

if they did lower the pension age the media will dig out some old duffer working at morrisons at 89 years old who would refuse to retire as he and others want to work as long as they can. not all oldies are like that but never get the air time. i for one had enough of work. did it from leaving school without a break. those who do more manual work are more or less played out and finish on ill health anyway.

I used to love my job but a few years ago things changed for the worse with the company losing interest in the sector I headed.
Couldn’t wait to get out and was luckily to be able to do so before my company pension was frozen till I was 65.

I'm with you there Phil. I'm 65, unemployed and having to claim UC instead of being eligible to receive my state pension. Just like Phil I've spent my working "career" from February 1973 in low paid/minimum wage dead end soul destroying jobs. I'm now expected to be actively searching for work instead of enjoying what time I may have left on this earth.
But here's the point - I don't want to work anymore, I'm not in the greatest health (both physical and mental), and I certainly don't want to end up in yet another low paid scum job. Raising the pension age was yet another underhand policy introduced by this government.

there are far many doing jobs all their lives like you have done. thats the problem in this country. people have to do them but as the years go by they,ll be filled by people screaming and shouting by being forced into them. schools do not help either in giving kids false hopes for the future when they leave. not everyone will be brain surgeons or university fodder.

when i was younger even in my 40,s all the older guys could only talk about one subject. when i retire blah, blah blah. could never understand it till i got to their age and knew what they were on about. always remember one guy who retired, who was more than a bit of a character, where his wife told the boss at the retirement do for him not under any circumstances ask him to come back part time unless he wanted a sore nose.

getting a job that you actually enjoy is one of the hardest things you can do. those who manage it can thank their lucky stars that they managed to do this. over the years its become harder to just get any job and likeing it is a bonus.

Yeah also agree. However I was office based working upto boardroom level and the constant mental stress and pressure takes just as much toll on you. I just couldn't bring myself to go back to that kind of intensity, but I may be the old duffer in Morrisons.

I’d love to retire early....I’ve done 44 years of cleaning up after folk and I hate it....I was ill for around 9 years but didn’t realise it (until my health recently improved!)
I just felt really old and put it down to my lifestyle so accepted it....nowerdays I’m a hell of a lot fitter but really depressed.
I’d need £1,000 per month to retire....and that’s never gonna happen.

Circumstances meant I retired at 56, not through ill health or anything. but it was the best thing I've ever done.
Then I moved over to Spain a year or so later.

i did. actually there was a scheme years ago where you could retire early if there was someone unemployed able to do your job. my only fear is once the oldies go will firms use it as another excuse to lower the wage previously offered to employees.
